Break Your Fast Due To Moon-Sighting

The Messenger of Allâh (sallallâhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam) said: “Fast due to its sighting (i.e the new moon for the month of Ramaḍân) and break your fast due to its sighting. If it is hidden from you then complete the time (of the month of Sh`abān) as thirty days.” (Bukhāri and Muslim)

Imam Ibn Bāz (may Allâh have mercy upon him) said concerning the above ḥadīth:

The meaning of this speech is: That which is obligatory is that they (the Muslims) fast due to the sighting of the crescent and they break their fast due to the sighting of the crescent. It is not for them to fast based upon the calculations nor due to precautionary measures. It’s a must (that the fast starts) from the sighting (of the new moon) or the completion of the time (for the month of Sh`abān). Continue reading

The Non-Material Things that Disrupt the Fast – Shaykh al-Albānī

Shaykh al-Albānī, may Allāh have mercy upon him, said:

Allāh, the Exalted and Most High, says in the Noble Qurān:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become people having Taqwaa. [Sooratul-Baqarah (2): 183]

So in this āyah, as will not be hidden to all those who are present, Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, informs the Ummah of Muḥammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) , through this āyah, that He has made fasting obligatory upon them just as He had made its like obligatory upon the nations before us. This is a matter that is well-known to all of the Muslims who read this āyah, and clearly understand its meaning. But what I wish to speak about is something else, a matter which very few of the general people notice – and this is the saying of Allāh, the Exalted and Most High, at the end of this āyah: Continue reading

Did Not Eat Saḥūr – Does He Have To Renew His Intention To Fast?

Shaykh Muḥammad Ibn Ṣâliḥ `Uthaymīn (may Allâh have mercy upon him) stated:

Eating the Saḥūr is Sunnah. If the person eats it, it is better. This is based on the statement of the Prophet  (صلى الله عليه وسلم):

Take the Saḥūr for indeed there’s a blessing in the Saḥūr. (Bukhāri and Muslim)

If he doesn’t eat it, there’s no sin upon him. Many from amongst the people eat much at night for dinner so when the person gets up during the last part of the night he doesn’t have the desire for food and remains (sufficed) upon his dinner. Continue reading

It Is Human Nature To Forget

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah  (may Allāh be pleased with him) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)  said:

مَنْ نَسِيَ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ، فَأَكَلَ أَوْ شَرِبَ، فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ، فَإِنَّمَا أَطْعَمَهُ اَللَّهُ وَسَقَاهُ – مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ
Whoever forgets while he is fasting and he eats or drinks, let him continue (complete) his fast. Indeed it was only Allāh who fed him and gave him drink. (Agreed Upon)

The Noble Scholar Shaykh Ibn Bāz (may Allāh have mercy upon him) commented:

This is a virtue from Allāh (‘azza wa-jall). Mankind is prone to forgetfulness just as the Prophet  (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “I am a human being like you. I forget just as you forget.”
Forgetfulness is from human nature. Therefore if he forgets while he is fasting in Ramadan or fasting as an expiation or fasting for a reason other than these two and he eats or drinks or he has done another one of the things that breaks the fast out of forgetfulness, his fast is sound. The Ruling of Fasting For The One Who Did Not Take The Saḥūr
