Menses Appeared Right After Breaking The Fast – Fast Valid?

Question posed to Shaykh Abdullāh Ibn Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdilazīz Ibn Humayd:

The monthly cycle appeared directly after breaking the fast before performing the Maghrib Prayer. Is my fast sound?

Answer:

Yes it is sound. As long as the menses did not come to you until after the setting of the sun, there is no making up of the fast upon you. This day (of fasting) is sound. As for the case if the menses came to you before the Adhaan, meaning by that, before the setting of the sun, the fast for that day has become invalid and it is a must that you make it up. As for the case when the menses has come to you after the setting of the sun and after you have broken your fast, the fast for this day is sound and it is not upon you to make it up, inshā-Allâh. Did Not Eat Saḥūr – Does He Have To Renew His Intention To Fast?

Shaykh Muḥammad Ibn Ṣâliḥ `Uthaymīn (may Allâh have mercy upon him) stated:

Eating the Saḥūr is Sunnah. If the person eats it, it is better. This is based on the statement of the Prophet  (صلى الله عليه وسلم):

Take the Saḥūr for indeed there’s a blessing in the Saḥūr. (Bukhāri and Muslim)

If he doesn’t eat it, there’s no sin upon him. Many from amongst the people eat much at night for dinner so when the person gets up during the last part of the night he doesn’t have the desire for food and remains (sufficed) upon his dinner. Continue reading

It Is Human Nature To Forget

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah  (may Allāh be pleased with him) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)  said:

مَنْ نَسِيَ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ، فَأَكَلَ أَوْ شَرِبَ، فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ، فَإِنَّمَا أَطْعَمَهُ اَللَّهُ وَسَقَاهُ – مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ
Whoever forgets while he is fasting and he eats or drinks, let him continue (complete) his fast. Indeed it was only Allāh who fed him and gave him drink. (Agreed Upon)

The Noble Scholar Shaykh Ibn Bāz (may Allāh have mercy upon him) commented:

This is a virtue from Allāh (‘azza wa-jall). Mankind is prone to forgetfulness just as the Prophet  (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “I am a human being like you. I forget just as you forget.”
Forgetfulness is from human nature. Therefore if he forgets while he is fasting in Ramadan or fasting as an expiation or fasting for a reason other than these two and he eats or drinks or he has done another one of the things that breaks the fast out of forgetfulness, his fast is sound. Fasting on the Day of Arafah Expiates Two Years

The Noble Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allah have mercy upon him) stated:

This day (the Day of Arafah) has within it a tremendous virtue. When he (the Prophet) was asked about fasting on it he said: “It expiates the previous year and the remaining year,” meaning the following year. Fasting (on that day) expiates two years. This indicates the virtue of fasting the Day of Arafah. Continue reading
