Advice on Raising Children

Shaykh Muqbil, the Muḥaddith of Yemen, was asked his advice on the upbringing and nurturing of our children. The following was his reply, which should be written in gold:

All praise be to Allāh and may the peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. To proceed: The upbringing of children is from the important affairs and is problematic. As for it being important, that is because the child takes from whomsoever he mixes with. If his father is a singer, then he will not hear except that his father singing. And if his father is an author, then from the very start, he will have a sheet of paper and pen drawing in a notebook until he fills up the notebook.

We say it’s like this: if his father is a officer and you were to say to him: “What would you like to be,” he will say, “I would like to be a officer,” and if his father is a scholar and you were to ask him, “what would you like to be,” he would say “I would like to be a scholar.” This is in his childhood before he begins to mingle in the streets. Commanding The Children To Pray

The Messenger of Allâh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) stated: “Command the children to pray at the age of seven, punish them for not praying at the age of ten and separate between them in the beds.”

The noble Scholar Shaykh Muḥammad Amān al-Jāmi (raḥimahullâh) stated:

The young child who is under the age of seven (in most cases) doesn’t understand. Based upon that, we have been commanded to command our children  with the prayer at the age of seven because they do not understand (in most cases) before that. The child’s point is seven years of age, then he is commanded with the prayer based on the statement of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم): “Command your children to pray at seven years of age, dicipline them for not praying at the age of ten and separate between them in the beds.” This are the Islamic mannerisms (that are upon us to observe); therefore it’s befitting to hold to them. Have a Lot of Children, Your Provisions Will Increase

The Noble Shaykh Muḥammad Ibn Sāliḥ al-‘Uthaymīn (may Allāh have mercy upon him) stated:

The one who has evil thoughts about his Lord has gone clearly astray when he has said: Don’t have a lot of children, it will cause your provisions to be restricted! By the Lord of the throne they have lied. When the people have a lot of children Allāh increases their provisions. That’s because there’s no creature upon the earth except that its provisions is upon Allāh. Therefore the provisions of your children are upon Allāh (‘azza wa jall). He is the one who opes up the doors of provision in order that you spend upon them. Continue reading

Teach Your Children the Adhkaar in Order That It Be on Your Scales of Good – Shaykh Sulaymaan ar-Ruhaylee

Shaykh Sulaymaan ar-Ruhaylee (may Allah preserve him) stated:

For this oh brothers, from that which we are heedless of is (the matter) that we (are to) cultivate our children upon the remembrance of Allah and that we (are to) get our children accustomed to remembering Allah. From the (time they are) youth, it is upon us that we get Continue reading

Cultivating Children Upon Islamic – Not Western – Cultivation

The Noble Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allah preserve him) stated:

It is known that obligations are not (mandated) upon the child who hasn’t reached puberty–not the prayer or other than it until he (or she) reaches puberty. The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) stated:

The pen is lifted from three (people).  The one sleeping until he awakes. The child until he has a wet dream (i.e reaches puberty). And from the insane person until he comes to his senses.

However the child is commanded with making it. Therefore his guardian commands him with the prayer when he reaches the age of seven and he has with him (the ability to) distinguish (between matters) and he knows what is said to him and that which he is commanded with. Therefore he is to be commanded with the prayer, not because it is obligatory upon him, he is only commanded with it as an exercise for him. Meaning as a means of getting him accustomed to the prayer until he becomes trained upon making it and he knows its importance. And as a result he grows up upon that so when he reaches puberty he is accustomed to the prayer. Continue reading

Shaykh Bāzmūl Warns the Parents of Children Sickened By the Khawārij

The Noble Shaykh Aḥmad Bāzmūl (may Allāh preserve him) stated:

I direct a warning to the guardians from the fathers, mothers, and other than them, that they pay attention and watch over their children in order that they don’t fall into speaking ill about the scholars and the Muslim rulers, due to which they may fall into the affairs of innovation and evil desires. That which is important, oh guardian, is that you know who are the companions of your child. Are they from the righteous gatherings or are they from the evil gathering? Continue reading

Do Not Expose Your Sins in Front of Family – Shaykh ‘Uthaymeen

The Noble Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy upon him) stated:

It is befitting for the man if he is one who is afflicted with (the committing of) an act of disobedience from the acts of disobedience that he is diligent upon not letting his family witness him committing it. I’ll give an example for that in the matter of smoking.  Some of the people are afflicted with this act of disobedience.  Then the person smokes in front of his children and as a result of that they become accustomed to this and possibly smoke as their father smokes.  With that, he (the father) becomes one who has directed (his children) to an evil so upon him is the act of sin and the sin of those who acted upon it (due to him) until the Day of Judgment.
