The Blessing Of Knowledge And Sitting With The Scholars

Shaykhul-Islam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy upon him) mentioned that the Commander of the Believers Umar Ibn al-Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

If the person will leave from his home and upon him are the sins similar to the mountains of Tihaamah. When he hears the knowledge, he has fear (of Allah’s punishment), returns back and repents. Then he leaves to go back to his home and there are no sins upon him. Based upon this,  do not separate (yourselves) from the sittings of the Ulamaa.

Obedience Magnifies The Soul And Disobedience Belittles It

Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy upon him) stated:

Allah The Most High stated: “The one who purified his soul is indeed successful and the one who corrupts his soul is indeed destroyed.” The meaning: The one who magnifies his soul, lifts it and makes it superior by way of being obedient to Allah is indeed successful. And the one who makes his soul inferior and insignificant and belittled it by way of disobedience to Allah is indeed the loser. There’s nothing that belittles the soul like disobedience to Allah. And there’s nothing that magnifies the soul, makes it honorable and raises it up (in status) like obedience to Him.

The Origins Of Wrongdoing

Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) stated:

The origins of wrongdoing are three:

1. Arrogance: It is that which drove Iblees to that which it drove him (i.e. to commit that which Iblees committed).

2. Desire: It is that which caused Aadam to be expelled from the Paradise.

3. Jealousy: It is that which caused one of the sons of Aadam to transgress against his brother.

Therefore, whoever is protected from the evil of these three (traits) then indeed he has been protected from evil. For disbelief is from arrogance; disobedience from desires; and transgression and oppression from jealousy. Continue reading

The Secret Of The Salaah

Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) stated:

The secret of the Salaah, its soul and core is the slave’s turning to Allah in totality whilst in the prayer. Therefore, just as it is not befitting that he turns his face away from the Qiblah to other than it during the Salaah, it is likewise not befitting to turn his heart away from his Lord to other than Him during the Salaah. Rather he (the slave) makes the Ka’bah, which is the house of Allah, the Qiblah of his face and body. (Likewise) he makes the Lord of the House the Qiblah of his heart and soul. So according to how much the servant turns to Allah in his Salaah, (then this) will determine how much Allah turns towards him. And if he (the slave) was to turn away, then Allah will turn away from him. And (the saying goes): “as he lives, he is treated (accordingly).” Continue reading

Patience Upon Trials

Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (may Allaah have mercy upon him) stated:

Whoever from amongst them is patient upon these trials, he attains salvation from that which is greater than it. Whoever is afflicted by these trials falls into that which is more evil than it. If he follows that up with sincere repentance (then he will be safe). If not, then he will be upon the path of those who are destroyed. Based upon this the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) stated: “I have not left after me a trial more harmful than the women upon the men.” Therefore the servant is tested by way of his desires in the life of this world. He’s also tested by the portion of the soul that commands with evil, his devil (that accompanies him) who seeks to mislead him and beautifies (for him evil). He’s also tested by his companions and that which he witnesses, regarding which his patience is Continue reading
