Question Posed To Imam Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy upon him):
Question: I have come to see that some of the people, upon seeing a tree growing on any grave, describe the inhabitant of the grave as a (righteous) character whose degree (of piety and righteousness) is such and such. Does the growing of trees upon the graves have any connection (with the righteousness of the inhabitant of the grave)?
Answer: There’s no origin for this. And the growing of trees or weeds upon the graves is not an evidence for the righteousness of its inhabitants. Rather that is a false belief. The trees grow upon the graves of the righteous and the wicked and it is not specifically for the (graves of the) righteous. Therefore it is befitting not to be deceived by the statement of the one who claims the opposite of that from the people whom have gone astray and the people of false creed. And Allah is the One who the help is sought from.
