A question posed to Imam Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy upon him):

Question:
I know that it is not permissible to give money for Zakaatul-Fitr and I mentioned this to my father; however, he didn’t accept it from me. He said that he doesn’t deny the Hadeeth on the Messenger of Allah; however, the country gives money (instead of food) and it’s upon us to do what some of the people do and that is to give money. However, I paid (Zakaatul-Fitr) for myself excluding my two parents – will it be accepted from me?

Answer:
That which is obligatory is to give food as Zakaatul-Fitr. This is what the majority of the scholars are upon. It is to be a Saa’a from staple food of the land. It can be from dates, barley, rice or anything from the staple food of the land. It is to be a Saa’a. This is what is obligatory upon every person, the man, woman, child and elder. A group from amongst the scholars have said that it is permissible to give money for Zakaatul-Fitr; however, it is a weak statement. That which is correct is that it is obligatory to give food for Zakaatul-Fitr with the majority of the scholars. Just as that has come in the Ahaadeeth on the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). Being that you have advised your father and he didn’t do it, then you give it for yourself even if he doesn’t know. Give it in food even if it doesn’t amaze your father.

(حكم إخراج زكاة الفطر نقداً )  2⃣

أنا أعرف بأن زكاة الفطر لا يجوز إخراجها نقداً, وقلت لوالدي ذلك ولكنه لم يقبل مني, وقال: إنه لا ينكر الحديث عن الرسول -صلى الله عليه وسلم-، ولكن البلد تخرج نقداً, فعلينا أن نفعل مثل بعض الناس أن نخرج نقداً, ولكنني أخرجت عن نفسي بدون أن أنوي, هل تقبل مني؟

الواجب إخراجها طعاماً، هذا الذي عليه جمهور أهل العلم، صاعاً من قوت البلد، من تمر أو شعير، أو أرز ، من قوت البلد، صاع، هذا هو الواجب عن كل نفس، عن الرجل والأنثى والصغير والكبير، وقال جماعة من أهل العلم: يجوز إخراجها نقداً، ولكنه قول ضعيف، والصواب أن الواجب إخراجها طعاماً عند جمهور أهل العلم، أكثر أهل العلم، كما جاء في ذلك الأحاديث عن رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم-، وإذا نصحتِ والدك ولم يفعل فأنت أخرجيه عن نفسك ولو ما درى، أخرجيها طعاماً ولو ما أعجب أبوكِ.
