This is a benefit from last night’s class in which our Shaykh, the Allāmah Muḥammad Ibn ‘Alī Ibn Ādam Al-Etiyūbī (may Allāh preserve him) mentioned in his explanation of Ḥadeeth #2217 of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim:

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Indeed my brother is having a stomach ailment.” The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “Give him honey.” So the man gave him (his brother) honey. Then the man came to him (the Messenger ﷺ) again and said, “Indeed I gave him the honey and it did not increase him except in stomach pains.” He ﷺ said it to him (the man) three times. Then he (the man) came a fourth time and he ﷺ said to him, “Give him honey.” The man said, “I indeed gave him the honey and it did not increase him except in stomach pain.” The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said in response, “Allāh has spoken the truth and the stomach of your brother has lied.” So he (the man) gave him (the brother) the honey and he became cured.

The Shaykh commented (on this narration):

Indeed the ‘Ulamā have stated that he ﷺ repeated giving him (the sick brother) the honey because it did not benefit him right away from the first time (he took it). That is because the sickness that was in him was severe and staunch. So every time (the honey was given) the honey was decreasing the sickness and its causes, by the permission of Allāh, until the sickness lightened and he (the sick brother) became cured from it completely.

قال شيخنا العلامة محمد بن علي ادم الإتيوبي في شرحه على حديث 2217 من صحيح مسلم والذي فيه : جاء رجلٌ إلى النبيِّ صلَّى اللهُ عليهِ وسلَّمَ فقال : إنَّ أخي استُطلقَ بطنُه . فقال رسولُ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليهِ وسلَّمَ ” اسقِه عسلًا ” فسقاهُ . ثم جاءَه فقال : إني سقيتُه عسلًا فلم يزدْه إلا استطلاقًا . فقال لهُ ثلاثَ مراتٍ . ثم جاء الرابعةَ فقال ” اسقِه عسلًا ” فقال : لقد سقيتُه فلم يزدْه إلا استطلاقًا . فقال رسولُ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليهِ وسلَّمَ ” صدق اللهُ . وكذب بطنُ أخيكَ ” فسقاهُ فبرِأَ
قال الشيخ معلقاً
إن العلماء قالوا تكرر سقيه بالعسل لأنه لم ينفعه مباشرة من أول مرة ، لأن الداء ( والمرض ) كان فيه شديداً وعنيفاً ففي كل مرة كان العسل ينقص الداء وأسبابه بإذن الله حتى خف المرض وشفي منه تماما
