Men are Known by the Truth

The Noble Shaykh Rabī’ al-Madkhalī (may Allāh preserve him) stated:

There is some speech that the scholars say, and it’s possible we can name it as a principle. It is that “Men are known by the truth and the truth is not known by men.”

The (statement) “Men are known by the truth…” means that we do not say they (i.e. men) are upon the truth except when we find the truth aiding them and the texts of the Quran and Sunnah aiding them.

The (statement): “… and the truth is not known by men” means that you make man as your only passageway. You make him a scale and a measuring tool for the truth. Whatever he says is the truth; whatever he doesn’t say is falsehood. Whatever he rejects is falsehood, though it is possibly the truth. Whatever he accepts is the truth, though it can possibly be in opposition to the command (of Allāh and His Messenger) and hence falsehood. Therefore, we don’t know the truth by way of men. Indeed we only know men by way of the truth.
