Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) stated:

As for the Imams of the Sunnah and the Jamaa’ah, the people of knowledge and Eemaan: They have in them knowledge, justice and mercy. They know the truth by which they are in agreement with the Sunnah, safe from the affairs of innovation. They are just with those who exit from it (i.e. The realm of the Sunnah), even if they (the ones who exited from the realm of the Sunnah) oppress them (the scholars).
Just as Allah has stated:

يا أيها الذين آمنوا كونوا قوامين لله شهداء بالقسط ولا يجرمنكم شنآن قوم على ألا تعدلوا اعدلوا هو أقرب للتقوى واتقوا الله إن الله خبير بما تعملون
“Oh you who believe be those who stand out firmly for Allah and be just witnesses. Let not the enmity and hatred of others cause you to avoid being just. Be just! That is nearer to piety, and fear Allah. Indeed Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.”
(Soorah al-Maa-idah: 8)

They have mercy upon the creation. They want for them that which is good, guidance and knowledge. They do not intend evil for them to begin with. Rather when they punish them and clarify their mistakes, their ignorance and oppression, their aim with that is to clarify the truth and to have mercy upon the creation. Their aim is the commanding of the right and the forbidding of the wrong. Their aim is that the entire (practice of the) religion is for Allah and that the word of Allah is uppermost.

قال ابن تيمية رحمه الله:
« أئمة السنة والجماعة وأهل العلم والإيمان: فيهم العلم والعدل والرحمة، فيعلمون الحق الذي يكونون به موافقين للسنة سالمين من البدعة، ويعدلون على من خرج منها ولو ظلمهم كما قال الله تعالى ﴿ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ كُونُواْ قَوَّامِينَ لِلّهِ شُهَدَاء بِالْقِسْطِ وَلاَ يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَى أَلاَّ تَعْدِلُواْ اعْدِلُواْ هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَى وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ إِنَّ اللّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ ﴾ [ المائدة: 8 ]،ويرحمون الخلق، فيريدون لهم الخير والهدى والعلم، لا يقصدون الشر لهم ابتداءا بل إذا عاقبوهم وبينوا خطأهم وجهلهم وظلمهم كان قصدهم بذلك بيان الحق ورحمة الخلق والأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر وأن يكون الدين كله لله، وأن تكون كلمة الله هي العليا»
