Mockery of the People of Knowledge

A question was posed to The Noble Shaykh Muqbil Ibn Haadee al-Waadi’ee (may Allah have mercy upon him):

What is the ruling for the one who makes mockery of the students of knowledge and the ‘ulamaa, describing them with harshness, sternness, and [saying] that they do not understand the modern day affairs?

The Shaykh answered:

All praise is due to Allah, may the Salaah of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, his Companions, and those who align themselves with him. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshiped except for Allah alone without any partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. As to what follows:

When the person belittles the people of knowledge for their personal selves, this is considered a clear sin. However, if the person belittles them and he intends by this belittlement to belittle the Book and the Sunnah, this is considered disbelief. But that which we advise our brothers with is to be patient; they should be deliberate in the affairs and they should learn. Indeed, these individuals who make mockery, the ending affair of their mockery will come upon them Inshaa’Allah.

Allah says:

“Oh you who believe, be patient and forbearing; remain firm and fear Allah in order
that you may be successful.”

This is what Nooh (‘alayhis salaam) said when his people passed by him mocking him while he was making the ark: “If you make mockery of us (now), we will (one day) make mockery of you just as you made mockery of us.”

Therefore, I advise you to be patient and to know that: “The good and evil are not the same. Repel with that which is better; if there is between you and him enmity, it will become as if he is a close friend.” Therefore be patient, may Allah bless you.

Allah says:

“And we have made from them leaders guiding by our command when they were patient
and they had certainty regarding our verses/signs.”

I advise you to let this mockery be a means of motivation for you to hold on to the Sunnah. Let it be a means for you to strive hard in seeking the beneficial knowledge. If we were to obey those individuals who make a mockery of us, we would leave off (seeking) knowledge. We would leave off calling to Allah. Those who are better than us have been mocked. The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was mocked, as well as the Prophets before him. Therefore, it is upon us to be patient.

[It is] from the blessing of Allah upon you if mockery is being made of you due to the da’wah, then you are on a magnificent level. Indeed it was said to the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) that he was insane and that he was a sorcerer. Don’t pay any mind (to the mockery), may Allah preserve you.

Allah says:

“Tomorrow they will come to know who is the liar, the insolent one!”

“And those who do wrong will come to know by what overturning they will be overturned.”

And with the praise being for Allah, the people are increased in hatred when they see them making mockery of Ahlus Sunnah, and Allah is the one from whom help is sought.
