Shaykhul-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله stated:
“Allāh سبحانه has informed (us) that He doesn’t punish a person who seeks forgiveness. That’s because seeking forgiveness wipes out the sin which is the cause of the punishment. Therefore, (due to the person seeking Allah’s forgiveness) the punishment is repelled.”

قال شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية رحمه الله
أخبر الله سبحانه أنه لا يعذب مستغفراً، لأن الاستغفار يمحو الذنب الذي هو سبب العذاب، فيندفع العذاب

Shaykhul-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله stated:
Al-Imām Ad-Dimishqī ‘Abdullāh bin Abī Zakariyyā رحمه الله did not allow anyone to (unjustly) backbite in his gatherings. He would say:
“If you mention Allāh we support you (in that) and if you mention the people (in an unlawful manner) we abandon you.”

الإمام الدمشقي عبد الله بن أبي زكريا، كان لا يترك أحداً يغتاب في مجلسه ، ويقول :
إن ذكرتم الله أعناكم ، وإن ذكرتم الناس تركناكم
[تاريخ دمشق (۱٢٧/١٧]
This is the way of the Salaf. They did not tolerate people’s honor to be attacked unjustly. So when we make the claim of following the Salaf and we’re in gatherings which people are being spoken about unjustly, remember this narration. May Allāh guide us all to truly follow the way of the Salaf and not just be people who make the claim of following the Salaf.
Ibn Qudāmah رحمه الله stated:
“We don’t declare anyone to be an innovator except the one who the Sunnah has declared to be an innovator. We don’t say anything from ourselves, however, the Prophet ﷺ said:
{Every newly invented matter is innovation and every innovation is misguidance}.”

قال ابن قدامة -رَحِمهُ الله
ونحن لا نُبدّع إلا من بدّعته السنة . ولا نقول شيئاً من عندنا . ولك النبي -صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمْ- قال كل محدثة بدعة وكل بدعة ضلالة
