Warning Against Innovation

Shaykhul-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله stated:

“Indeed warning the Ummah against the matters of innovation (in the religion) is obligatory according to the consensus of the Muslims.”

[Majmū Al-Fatāwā 28/222]

No Tolerance for Unjust Backbiting

Al-Imām Ad-Dimishqī ‘Abdullāh bin Abī Zakariyyā رحمه الله did not allow anyone to (unjustly) backbite in his gatherings. He would say:

“If you mention Allāh we support you (in that) and if you mention the people (in an unlawful manner) we abandon you.”

[Tārīkh Dimishq 17/127]

This is the way of the Salaf. They did not tolerate people’s honor to be attacked unjustly. So when we make the claim of following the Salaf and we’re in gatherings which people are being spoken about unjustly, remember this narration. May Allāh guide us all to truly follow the way of the Salaf and not just be people who make the claim of following the Salaf.

We Say What The Sunnah Says

Ibn Qudāmah رحمه الله stated:

“We don’t declare anyone to be an innovator except the one who the Sunnah has declared to be an innovator. We don’t say anything from ourselves, however, the Prophet ﷺ said:

{Every newly invented matter is innovation and every innovation is misguidance}.”

[Tahrīm An-Nathar Fì Kutub Al-Kalām Pg.59]

Don’t Put Your Emotions Before Allāh’s Legislation

The Noble Scholar Shaykh Muhammad bin Sālih Al-‘Uthaymīn رحمه الله stated:

“A person is obligated not to give precedence to his emotions over the (Islāmic) legislation and sound intellect. Indeed emotions are not reliable (because they’re subjective). How often does a person act emotionally then retracts. However, the (Islāmic) legislation is a firm basis (that doesn’t change).”

[At-Ta’līq ‘Alā Sahīh Al-Bukhārī V.2 Pg.368]

A Moment of Pleasure Can Lead to A Lifetime of Sorrow

“Perhaps a (short) time of pleasure brings about a longtime sorrow.”

[Az-Zuhd of Ibn Al-Mubārak 1/98]

The evil pleasures of life are only temporarily enjoyed, however, the punishment of Allāh is severe and unbearable. Therefore, it is from sound intellect that one controls oneself and forebear the inner-struggle when turning away from the evil pleasures to protect oneself from the possibility of experiencing longtime sorrow in this life as well as the next life.
